I wanted to send a friendly reminder that it is absolutely imperative that all of you review your uninsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM) on your personal automobile liability policies to make sure you have adequate uninsured motorist coverage in case of an accident.
THE COLD HARD FACTS
- Southern California is the hit-and-run capital of the world.
- You are 50% more likely to be hit by an uninsured, underinsured, or hit-and-run driver. Additionally, this is more probable if you are on a bicycle or are a pedestrian.
- If you are seriously injured or a loved one is wrongfully killed, chances are you will only receive financial help from yourself, your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, or your personal assets.
- If you’re injured by a hit-and-run driver and they are apprehended and prosecuted, the chance of obtaining restitution in a criminal proceeding is slim to none.
The perfect uninsured motorist coverage should equal the liability coverage you carry in case you cause an accident. Also, excess or umbrella coverage may also be available to increase your UM/UIM coverage.
